Michael believes that design is magic.

I am Michael Neal and I can teach you how to enchant the world.

From masonry to memes, we shape the world and bewitch the mind through the power of symbol. That's what I argue anyway, when you find me teaching the Grad Thesis and Seminar courses in ArtCenter’s MGx program. In this roll, my students and I get to explore the metaphysical, philosophical, cultural and commercial influences deep within the history of design, and how its ancient origins still reverberate and collide within the context of contemporary consumerism. If this sounds too myth-y mountain, there is a lot of disco, manga and amusement parks in there too. In the end, I guess that I'm still just an 80s kid with a love for cartoons and critical theory.

Artist and MadMan, Creative Director to Educator, and occasional writer, I have spent 20+ years exploring the worlds of design and digital media. The result is a hybrid wide-eyed child and existential humanist philosopher. Which is to say that I bring a deep understanding of theory, history, social philosophy, and anthropological mysticism, to my approach to puns. In my best moments, I hope that I am a champion of creativity athwart a world of commercialism.

I joke that I am a jack-of-all-trades and a Master of Design Criticism. So while my fundamentals of making are on-point—be they traditional or digital modalities—concept always comes first. In both my work with students, and in my personal practice, I explore the variations of media as storytelling platforms. I believe that the meanings and expression found through art and design, when used for truth, are doorways to a better and more inclusive world.
